640. Great Dodd summit - 1st March 2022

Great Dodd summit is a large area with a small cairn at the northern end and a stone shelter in the south-east corner. (Wainwright #157, 2812ft).

Wow you can see a lot from up here! I have counted 127 Wainwrights in this picture including the one I am standing on. You can also see a small part of no less than four of the main lakes Thirlmere, Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite and Ullswater which I don't think I have seen on any other summit so far. To the south the symmetry of Catstye Cam and Lower Man either side of Raise is also striking.

One other thing I noticed on this picture is that it shows up a rare Wainwright mistake. In Book 1 - Great Dodd 12 - The View he shows Great Borne, Mellbreak and Whiteless Pike close together to the west. His drawing is exactly as seen on the extreme right of my picture. However that is not Mellbreak in the middle of the 3, its Hen Comb. The proof of this can be seen on the following two pictures from Mellbreak looking back, Great Dodd is not visible and from Hen Comb looking back it is.
