13.05 A visitor before we had even got out of the car as we parked on the side of the road at Calebreck. We had checked out and been for a short walk to Friars Crag earlier.

13.26 A very quiet area and the weather was much cooler than the forecast had predicted as we set off.

13.45 The path leads around West Fell. We even got a few raindrops as we walked.

14.12 After turning the corner it begins to rise gently and passes through the disused Driggith Mine.

14.22 Above the mine looking over to Carrock Fell.

14.57 Panorama 866 High Pike ascent.

14.57 Panorama 867 High Pike summit (Wainwright #193 2159ft). A very fine lunch stop with seating provided.

15.21 The bench on the summit was very comfortable. It is a solid slate structure which replaced the previous wrought iron one in 1960 because sheep would get their horns entangled in it.

But, up to the end of 1960, the biggest surprise of all was a wrought iron garden seat, a contraption of elaborate embellishments into the voluptuous curves of which tired limbs surrendered gratefully: no other fell top provided such luxurious comfort. Its very ornamentation proved its undoing, however, and it was removed and replaced late in 1960 with another seat - a structure of slate slabs, severely simple in design - after sheep had been found held captive by it, their horns entangled in the ironwork.

The engraving reads:

"He is a portion of that lovliness that once he made more lovely"

It is dedicated to Mick Lewis who died on May 8th 1944 aged 16, and also to his mother.

15.24 We were in no hurry today. Looking across to Carrock Fell we can see most of our route.

  15.57 Crossing Milton Hill

15.57 Over the top of Mungrisedale Common the Scaffels and Great Gable were just visible through the haze.

16.21 The top section of Carrock Fell becomes much more rocky.

16.23 Looking back at our route from High Pike.

16.59 Panorama 868 Milton Hill on the ascent with a brief view of Bowscale Tarn.

16.29 Panorama 869 Carrock Fell summit (Wainwright #194 2165ft). A great fell to end with - an easy walk and a very nice summit cairn.

16.29 Looking along the path we walked to Great Calva two days ago.

13.20 A tiny bit of Bowscale Tarn is just visible.

16.47 We can also see the car parked on the road.

17.11 The path back down was not on one of the apps but was on the other. We had spotted it as we walked up and it looked much faster than going back to Drygill Head.

17.34 At the bottom we forded the stream after adding a few extra rocks.

17.50 Back at the road and we were heading for the M6 and home around 1pm.
