10.48 Parking on the road down to Stonethwaite. |
I wish they'd signpost the route more clearly. (photo taken at 15.19 on the way back) |
11.17 Borrowdale gradually coming into view as we climb the gentle path around the north and then west side of the fell. The route was decided by Will and was a last minute change from the plan to go up Big Stanger Gill. A good change as it turned out, everyone we met who had come up that way was complaining about it and two of them came back with us. |
11.18 To the west Black Star comes into view. |
11.34 Crossing the wall brings us out onto the open fell. |
11.51 Looking up the valley to Combe Head. |
12.03 A nice view of the crags on Thorneythwaite Fell, with more of Honister coming into view. We could track the path on the other side of the valley from here and had planned to do Glaramara and come home that way. However drained energy reserves and the beckoning swimming pool in our hotel put paid to that plan. |
12.10 Panorama 1010 Rosthwaite Fell ascent. The path had petered out and we are now climbing the open fell using the map to aim for Bessyboot, which we cannot yet see. |
13.16 Reaching Bessyboot and looking across at yesterday's summits. Lots of flies made standing on the actual summit almost impossible for much of the stop. |
13.47 Panorama 1011 Bessyboot, the Wainwright summit of Rosthwaite Fell. Wainwright #207 1807 ft. After having lunch and deciding to leave Glaramara for another day we spent quite a while standing about talking and watching the planes pass nearby. Dave in the dark shirt was a former pilot and the other guy was a retired teacher. |
Another jet show today, though not as many passes as yesterday. This one ran very close to Eagle Crag. Directly below the plane in the third picture is a good view of the small scramble that is the key to climbing Eagle Crag. |
