335. Souther Fell summit - 17th August 2019

On top of Souther Fell looking south. On the way from Pembrokeshire to Scotland we broke the journey in Penrith and fitted in a quick Wainwright. We walked up from Mungrisedale village and once we found the path it was a quick ascent. (Wainwright #87, 1713ft).

This picture shows what I believe to be a possible error by Wainwright, or at least a notable ommision. In Bk 5 Souther Fell 8 he draws Allen Crags between High Seat and Esk Pike. On my picture we can see a distinct dark fell to the left of High Seat which I think is Glaramara, not Allen Crags. Distant visibility was poor to the south when I visited, so Esk Pike is not visible. When viewed in the reverse direction, from Allen Crags, the area between Blencathra and Clough Head is almost entirely blocked by Glaramara - Wainwright and I agree on this. Its possible that a small bit of Allen Crags is visible but the bulk of what can be seen on this picture is Glaramara with Rosthwaite Fell in front of it.
