10.53 This route was so easy to get started on - straight out of the back of the hotel car park and up the side of the fell. The route up to the summit of Arnison Crag was steep but followed this wall, so we could shelter from the wind. |
10.54 Panorama 240 Arnison Crag. |
11.31 We had looked at the cloud level carefully from early morning. Place Fell (2156ft) became clear as we had breakfast and Hartsop Dodd (2028 ft) was also clear when we reached Arnison Crag. The cloud in this photo is covering Stony Cove Pike on Caudale Moor (2503 ft) so the cloud level is 2200ft or so. This meant that our next stop, Birks, at 2041 ft, should be clear but Saint Sunday Crag at 2759 ft would probably have to wait for another day.

12.12 On the grass path up the side of Birks, looking across to Place Fell with Arnison Crag in the right foreground. |
12.13 Panorama 241 On the side of Birks looking across to Hartsop. |
12.42 It was very windy on Birks as we sat looking over the southern end of Ullswater. |
12.47 Panorama 242 Birks
13.07 Panorama 243 Descending Birks towards Thornhow End |
The finest way down (because of the view of Ullswater) is by the ridge to the north, leading all the way down to the wall at Thornhow End. |

15.46 We had walked across from Birks, stopping in the rain at Lanty's Tarn for lunch, before climbing up the side of Glenridding Dodd. |

16.09 It had been windy all day but this side of Glenriding Dodd felt the full force coming down the valley from Helvellyn. Lanty's Tarn, where we had had lunch, is in that woodland on the other side of the valley.
